At the end of November this year, Canada announced the expansion of study opportunities for the family members of international students and foreign workers. Specifically, the family members of these individuals can now apply for an Open Study Permit, allowing their children to study at any school in Canada without needing a letter of acceptance from a school.

Family members accompanying are defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as any family member listed on the work or study permit application of the principal applicant and who will accompany the principal applicant to Canada, including:

  • Spouse of the principal applicant;
  • Dependent children (and the dependent children of those children – meaning the applicant's grandchildren)

With this change, dependents do not need an admission letter from a specific school and can study at any educational institution in Canada, expanding educational opportunities for children in the family. However, to be eligible for this benefit, applicants for an Open Study Permit must apply before coming to Canada and must be accompanied by a family member with an approved work or study permit.

Now, your whole family can easily go to Canada to work and study together. If you are planning to move to a new country like Canada, now is a good time to prepare your family's application.
